‘A Painting As A Resting Place For The Gravedigger’ is my contribution to the second edition of PASS, a scenic arts route along the villages of Huise, Mullem, Wannegem & Lede (BE). With this in-situ installation I anticipated to a strong recollection that I have of my sole experience as a gravedigger some 23 years ago on the exact same graveyard in Huise, in the summer of ‘98 when I was working as a student for the municipal green service. I can assure you, digging up a sealed off, non-degradable plastic body bag (as was apparently the case in those days) with a rotten corpse inside was quite a challenging experience for this young man’s soul and it left a lasting & vivid imprint in my memory. As a sign of respect for the people who do this as a daily job, I created a spatial painting as a (temporary) resting place for the gravedigger: a skyblue shelter in oil paint that was entirely scraped off a stretched canvas, with a canvas bed and pillows underneath it. Two ‘Salami Sandwich Paintings’ (oil paint, on a wood & canvas 'sandwich') were placed onto the bed, as a reference to Saint Anthony Abbot, the patron saint of the gravediggers, a hermit who spend most of his life fasting in solitary confinement in a cave in the desert and who is often depicted with a pig alongside his feet. The black ‘scent tree’ in oil paint hanging inside the shelter refers to my strongest recollection of this experience: the overall penetrating stench of sheer Death that came out of the grave. And finally, the work is left out in the open, unprotected, and will probably suffer severely from the outside weather conditions. After all, is there a better way to pinpoint such a thing like vanitas? (cdv)

It took me several tens, or maybe even hundreds of hours of maddening concentration and endurance to make this piece, which consists of a sheet of pure oil paint hanging on a steel bar. Yesterday evening (sept. 6th 2018) I finally managed to finish the damn thing. Then, when I hung it on the wall for the first time to look at the result, I was deeply moved in a very particular, personal way: I did it, I made a painting without a canvas, a message without a carrier, so to speak. A brittle banner, as transient as all of my personal air castles! As I was taking some quick snapshots of it, all of a sudden the sheet started to rip. And that was the end of it - nearly, because I somehow, in a miraculous way, managed to catch it just in time and to lay it down pretty much as a whole. I hurriedly improvised to restore the rips as good as I could and now, I have to let it dry while laying down. I don't know if the thing will ever be able to be hung up again. Maybe that was really just the end of it. Sooo much effort, for a result that lasted for like 10 minutes... Oh well, it was worth it. After all, air castles are not meant to last forever.
